Final examination information

Dates and times:

• Listening and written parts: Friday, May 5, normal class tim
• Speaking: Monday, May 8 (about 30-45 minutes per group: in my office!
  • Group 1: 9:00
  • Group 2: 10:00
  • Group 3: 11:00
  • Group 4: 12:00

Purpose:

• One purpose of the final exam is to motivate you to review and to help you remember what you have learned in this class.
• The second purpose is to help me evaluate what you have learned and give you a grade.

About the exams:

• The listening/written exam will last about one hour.
  • You will listen to one or two short lectures and take notes. These may be lectures you have heard or have not heard.
  • You will be tested on vocabulary in Contemporary Topics: recognition and meaning.
  • You will be asked to supply some of the phrases we learned in Communication on Campus in approprite situations.
  • You will be asked to use some of the phrases from the warm-ups.
  • You will answer some true/false or multiple choice questions about what your classmates said in their presentations. You may use your notes.

• The speaking exam will be in my office, 209. There will be three parts. The exam will be done in small groups. I will give you your groups by Wednesday, May 3.
  • 1. Briefly tell me and your group about one experience you've had in the U.S. (about 2 minutes). You may use brief notes, but don't read. Prepare before the speaking exam. Use what you've learned in this course.
  • 2. Before Monday, May 8, agree as a group on one current newspaper article you will all read. You can use News for You or another paper. Each student must write and bring one good discussion question written on a piece of paper with your name on it. You will discuss the article using your questions. Use what you've learned in this course. (You will take turns being the leader.)
  • 3. Discuss a topic I give you. Use what you've learned in this course.

Review these things!

1. The main ideas from presentations. You will answer some true/false or multiple choice questions about what your classmates said in their presentations. You may use your notes.

2. Listening and speaking

• Communicating on Campus: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 11, 12 (just study the last page of each chapters: the summary of phrases)
• Contemporary Topics:Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8: vocabulary, note-taking techniques, and the two or three most important ideas from each lecture. I may dictate some of the vocabulary words to you.

3. Pronunciation

• Phonetic (pronunciation) symbols: hearing and saying the sounds of English
• Syllabic stress: hearing and saying words with the correct syllables stressed
• Sentence stress: knowing the parts of speech that are stressed in English sentences and correctly saying sentences
