Start: Today, I'd like to discuss _________________________
Suggestions: Think about what you are really interested in, look in the newspaper, use topics in CT, etc. If you need ideas, ask me or ask Tom
Don't be too general! (Too general: "In my opinion, war is bad.")
Communicating on Campus: Use what you are learning in Chapter 7
Opinions:
Example: General topic children and television
(Opinion)
I feel that children should not be allowed to watch television before they are five years old because (1) physical, cognitive and creative development are stifled, (2) children become passive instead of active participants in the world, and (3) there is too much violence on television. What's your opinion?
Questions to keep the conversation going later:
a. If you become a parent, what restrictions will you place on your children's television viewing?
b. How much television did you watch each day before elementary school, in elementary school, in junior high, and in high school? What did you watch?
c. Do you think that watching violence on TV and in movies, or listening to violent song lyrics, results in more violent behavior in society?
