Your final paper and presentation for Professor Doan's class!

To summarize what Professor Doan said in his class . . .

• You will write a paper and make a presentation on one kind of music you are interested in. If you are working in a group, the group must divide the topic and each write and present about a different aspect. [My advice: Don't make your topic to broad or general!]
  • If you want to change groups or topics, ask Professor Doan (and me, too, please!)
• Content of your paper and presentation
  • In your paper and presentation, answer the questions who, what, where, when, why, and how.
  • Clearly explain the relationship between the music you are talking/writing about and American Society
• Your paper
• Your paper is due either December 4 (if your presentation is 12/2 or 4), or December 9 or 11
• Be sure to cite your sources by putting the author's name and the page number behind any idea or information you take from a source (anyplace other than your own mind: a book, a magazine, a CD cover, a website, a concert, an interview, etc.) List all the sources you used on the last page of your paper in alphabetical order. Also include a "discography", which is a list of the important recordings of this period, composer, or musician.
  • One source should be your textbook!
  • If you use the Internet to find sources, you must also tell in your paper what sources you found and used with the Internet Use only reliable sources.
• Your paper must be three pages or more and "typed" (printed -- not written "by hand")
• Your presentation
  • I don't know if Professor Doan will give you points on your presentation (you can ask him), but I will give you English points based on: preparation, grammar, pronunciation, and presentation skills.
  • Your presentation must include at least one video or audio example.
  • Your presentation should be 5 minutes long (each person). You may also have 5 minutes extra to play music or show a video.
  • Use visual aids (graphs, charts, photos, posters, etc.). Imagine you are teaching your classmates

" ... each group member [should] ... present on their area or specialty for approximately five minutes not to exceed an additional five minutes with supporting audio or video examples (live or pre-recorded). Each group will:

• address a general description of the tradition
• when and where is occurred
• who participated in it and on what instruments, and
• where the tradition came from and how it is related to its time in history as well as t our own time.

The paper will be 3-5 pages in length and

will include a bibliography [a list of sources you used] and discography [a list of the most important recording of this type of music]."
