Final Procedure

In general

• You will take the final in small groups.
• You will come to class on Friday, December 5 or on Monday, December 8. You are free on the day you don't take the final. The final will be in room 112.
• There is class on Wednesday, December 10, and Friday, December 12.

Parts of the final

• Part 1 (easy) I will ask you to say some sentences from the lessons we have studied in the text book.
• Part 2 (a little harder) I will ask you to read something new aloud.
• Part 3 (hardest):
  • You'll have a conversation with the students in your group. Everyone must participate.
  • Your group can choose three topics from the list below. Then I will choose one or two of the three. (Students in past years suggested these topics.)
  • You don't need to memorize your conversation, but thinking about and practice vocabulary and grammar you might need will help you. Prepare if you want to succeed.
  1. What is the most interesting place or the most impressive place to visit in the United States and why?
  2. What was the single most important experience you had in the United States?
  3. Did you suffer from culture shock at any time during the year? What were the greatest cultural adjustments you had to make?
  4. What were the most important things you learned through the TIUA program? What did you learn about yourself and the world? (Think about friends, social relationships, education and academics, culture, international relations, self-confidence, food, life style, etc.)
  5. What WU activities did you participate in and what did you learn from these?
  6. Talk about dorm life and having a roommate: What was difficult, what was enjoyable, what did you learn, etc.
  7. What holidays did you experience in the United States and what did you learn? In general, how are holidays here different from those in Japan?
  8. What new habits or skills did you learn here? Did you change the way you live, did you acquire some new personality traits, do you learn to do something you had never tried before?
  9. How would you evaluate your own academic and social efforts and accomplishment during your year here? In what areas were you successful? Where could you have tried harder? What do you wish you had done but didn't do?
  10. Will your life be different in Japan as a result of having lived in another country for a year? Will you have trouble adjusting to life in Japan again? What will you miss most about TIUA, Willamette, Oregon or the U. S.?
• Part 4: You'll briefly tell me what your plans are between December 21 and the new school year in Japan.

• Practice using what we have learned in conversation
• Practice using what we have learned as you read aloud
• Prepare in advance for all parts of the final
