What are the purposes of this course?

• To help you improve your ability to understand spoken English by recognizing the pronunciation of English speakers
• To help you improve your ability to speak English so other people can understand you
• To help you speak in a way that English speakers will feel comfortable speaking with you

What will you learn about English?

• How to make sounds
• Stress patterns in words and phrases
• Linking sounds and words
• Intonation

How will you learn?

• Listening to short explanations by the professor
• Practicing in class as a group and in pairs
• Doing very short skits and presentations
• Practicing and studying the textbook outside of class
• Listening to tapes (optional but recommended)

Class rules

• Come to class every day ready to work hard. Actively participate in class and do your best
• Bring your text book
• Please do not chew gum or eat in pronunciation class.
• Ask questions when you do not understand
• Do your homework. Homework is often practicing.
• Call or E-mail me before class if you cannot come. You are still responsible for turning in work and for understanding class. Ask a friend to take notes for you.
• Quizzes cannot be made up later
• Use English 97.12346788% of the time.

Texts

• Sounds Great: Book 1 by Beverly Beisbier
• Longman American English Dictionary or another dictionary that uses the IPA system

Tapes: Tapes that accompany the textbook are located in three places:

• The Kaneko language lab (do not take them from the lab, please)
• The Kaneko Learning Center (do not take them from the lab, please)
• At the front desk (you may check a tape out for 24 hours)
• In my office
• Each student does not have a set of tapes because they are very expensive.

Grades

• A point system will be used for assignments and tests. Each assignment, quiz and test carries a certain number of points.
• There will be quizzes, a mid-term and a final.
• At the end of the term, your grade will be based on the percent of the points you have earned compared to the total possible..
• You will be able to see your grade and scores anytime by going to the class website and using a password you give me.
• The grading scale is:
• A+ 97-100%; A 93-96%; A- 90-92%; B+ 87-89%; B 83-86%; B- 80-82%; C+ 77-79%; C 73-76%; C- 70-72%; F 69% and below

TIUA Attendance Policy

• If you miss "more than 20%" of the classes (5 classes), you will receive an "F". (You may also receive an "F" if your work is unsatisfactory.)
• Three late arrivals count as an absence
