    • Assignments will help you with the English you need to succeed in American History
    • Assignments will improve your general English skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing
  • This English course is not designed to be "tutoring" for your elective course.
    • If you have questions about the content or assignments in American History, please contact Professor Jopp . There is also a class tutor for American History: Amanda Schieber.
    • I am not Professor Jopp's secretary :). Please do not give me papers for her or messages for her.
  • In Applied English class, we will:
    • Learn and practice English that you need in order to understand lectures, to read the text, to write test answers, and to participate in American History class.

  • Bring your text and your dictionaries.
  • Complete all in-class and homework assignments at a satisfactory level or above.
  • Pass quizzes and tests.
  • Use English in class and encourage others to use English. Try to speak English 97.145927% of the time. No chewing gum in class. It makes it hard to practice English.
  • You may drink beverages in class. Don't spill!
  • No eating food in class, please, because I would like you to focus on the class (and it makes me hungry!)

Grades

  • There is no make-up of quizzes and tests unless the students contacts me BEFORE class and has a very good reason for missing a quiz or test.
  • I will not collect or check some homework. Ask when you have questions.
  • If students begin to be absent from class or late to class, there will be "pop" quizzes at the beginning of class.
  • Final grades can be A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, or F. Each assignment or quiz/test will have a point value. At the end of the semester:
      • "A"s are 90% and above"B"s are 80%-89%"C"s are 70%-79%
      • 69% or below = "F"
  • At the end of the semester, if you are between two grades, you will get the higher grade if you tried hard to do your best and participated actively in class and tutoring. You can check your grade any time using the course website and a password.

  • Students who miss 20% or more of the classes will receive an "F" and will not get credit. This is TIUA policy. Also,
    • Three late arrivals equal one absence. You are absent if you are asleep in class. Students in the U.S. do not sleep in class.
    • You will be marked absent if you arrive more than about 20 minutes late

Special note about doing your own work

  • Plagiarism will result in the students involved receiving an "F" on the assignment.
  • Plagiarism is copying text or ideas from another student's work, or from a text or website, without giving credit.

Success

I will do everything possible to help you succeed in this course, but you are in control of your success and your future.
