Tutors and Tutoring:

A TIUA tutor
  • is a successful Willamette student who is paid to help you during his or her tutoring hours only.
  • is a student who is interested in you and in international education.

A tutor

  • can help you with assignments that you still don't completely understand even after you have carefully listened in class and have done the best job you can do on your homework.
  • can provide extra help to more advanced students by discussing reading assignments with you or by conversing about topics of your choice.
  • can help you learn how to study.

Do as much of your homework as possible before you see the course tutor. Additionally, tell the tutor exactly what the assignment is. Bring any textbooks and handouts you need for the assignment. Bring dictionaries.

Bring specific questions:

Examples of good use of a tutor:

  • "I can't understand number 7 on page 48 in the exercise on topic sentences."
  • "I have finished my paper. Would you check to see if I used the past simple tense correctly and explain any errors to me so I can correct them myself?"
  • "I have already read this newspaper article. May I explain the main points to you for practice?"
  • "I need to learn how to organize my time so that I am not studying at 4 a.m. Do you have some suggestions?"

Examples of inappropriate (bad) use of a tutor:

  • "I don't understand my homework."
  • "Would you correct the mistakes in my paper?"
  • "Please tell me what this newspaper article says."
