Purposes of this activity

• To practice using what you have learned in Listening and Speaking
• To help Willamette students learning Japanese

Procedure

• You will be in groups with one TIUA student and one WU student. A few groups will be three students.
• Divide your time so that you speak Japanese for about 1/2 hour and English for about 1/2 hour. Try not to mix the languages.
• The two classes will also meet together on April 2 and April 23.

Hints

• Relax, this is a conversation not an interview
• Look at your partner not at the desk. The focus should be listening and speaking, not writing. Make sure everyone in the group is included in the conversation.

Use these and similar phrases when appropriate

• Hello. I'm _________________________ . Nice to meet you. (If you don't know someone.)
• Hi, nice to see you again! (If you know someone.)
• I remember you, but could you say your name again for me, please. (You recognize someone, but you can't remember his or her name.)
• Excuse me. Could you please repeat that?
• Excuse me. Could you please speak more slowly?
• How do you spell that?
• I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand.
• I have a question.
• Hmm, let me think a minute.
• Could you tell me more about . . . .
• Could you give me an example?
• When? Where? Why? How?

• Remember what we learned about opening, continuing, and closing a conversation.
• Use the "orange phrases" and all the phrases we've learned in Communicating on Campus
• Use the verb tenses you've learned in grammar class
