Bilingual Education
Your name __________________________
- "bi" is a prefix that came into English from "bi" in Latin,
meaning "twice" or "two
- "lingual" means "with the tongue" and comes from the Latin
word for tongue, "lingua"
- Of course, we know that the English adjective, bilingual,
describes a person who is skilled in two languages. It can also be
used with other nouns, for example, in "bilingual education",
which is education that takes place in a combination of two
languages.
- Most bilingual education in Oregon is for elementary school
children and usually involves learning school subjects in both
Spanish and English. However, there are also schools in which
children learn in Japanese and English, French and English,
etc. There is more information about this on the sheet I gave
you about the visit to Grant School
