1. When did the first people of European descent begin to come to Oregon? What was the situation in Oregon before this time? (Who lived here and what were their lives like? You can use the area around Salem as an example.)
2. What are five reasons people emigrate from their home countries and five reasons why people immigrate to new countries or regions (five "push" factors and five "pull" factors)? Which of these reasons are reasons people came to Oregon in the last two centuries?
3. Tell about the person or persons you talked with at Chemeketa Community College.
4. Why is there bilingual education at Grant School? Where are many of the Spanish speaking students at Grant from? What is your opinion of the bilingual program at Grant (explain your answer)?
5. After the Vietnam War, many immigrant groups came to Oregon from Southeast Asia. Tell about one of these groups. Include in your answer the reasons they came and something about their former and current lives and culture.
6. Many European groups began to come to Oregon in the mid 1800s and have continued to come. What are two of these groups? When did they come? Why have they come and why have some of the immigrants settled near Salem? What do you know about their history and their lives now?
7. When did the first groups of Japanese arrive in Oregon? Why did these groups of Japanese immigrants come to Oregon and what did they do here? What else do you know about Japanese-Americans in Oregon?
8. What do you know about Korean immigration to Oregon and to Salem?
9. About 23% of all "Americans" are descendants of immigrants from what country? What do you know about this group?
10. What do you know about black immigrants to Oregon?
11. Tell about the immigrants in Japan? Will you view immigrants in Japan and immigration in general any differently as a result of this class? Explain.
12. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a country accepting large numbers of immigrants. Should Japan accept and treat immigrants differently?
13. How have your impressions of "Americans" and "American culture" changed since you began this class?
