• Tuesdays and Fridays: 11:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 2:20 in Kaneko 112

Course information

• Applied English (English V) meets separately and carries its own credit. You will receive a separate grade for Applied English.
• All language skills are practiced: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.
• Improving your overall English skill is one goal of Applied English (English V).
• Another goal of Applied English is to help you with the English you need to succeed in your "Volunteerism" elective.

General Course Requirements

• Requirements
  • Attendance at and active participation in all classes
  • Use of English in class
  • Completion of all in-class and homework assignments
  • Satisfactory performance on quizzes and tests. There may be "pop" quizzes, too.
  • Evidence in your Volunteerism assignments that you are using and improving your English skills. I may grade your English on some assignments that Professor Post gives you.

Grades

• A point system will be used. Each assignment carries a certain number of points. Your final grade will depend on:
  • attainment and/or completion of the general course objectives and requirements, and
  • the percent of points you earned of the total points possible
    • A+ 97-100%; A 93-96%; A- 90-92%; B+ 87-89%; B 83-86%; B- 80-82%; C+ 77-79%; C 73-76%; C- 70-72%; F 69% and below

Attendance Policy (See the "TIUA American Studies Program Catalog", page 14)

• If you miss "more than 20%" of the Applied English classes, you will receive an "F". (See the "TIUA American Studies Program Catalog", page 14)
• Three late arrivals count as an absence. (See the "TIUA American Studies Program Catalog", page 14) In my class, you are late if you arrive anytime after the class starting time.
• If you are asleep in class, I will ask you to leave the class and mark you absent.
• In classes in the U. S. at all levels you are always responsible for both in-class work and homework, regardless of the reason for the absence.
