The Civil Right Movement and Protest Songs
Side 1

1. Choose (1) a group leader and (2) someone to write VERY short notes (a few words)

2. Discuss these two questions

a. (5 minutes) Music has often been used in the U.S. during wars and in protests. During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, music was also important.

Has music also often been used in Japan in wars and in politics? When and where (give some examples)?

Why is music so powerful? (Is it the tunes/melodies? The words? The group activity of singing? Can you be specific?)

b. (5 minutes) During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S., people often used old songs and then wrote new words for them. Guess what kind of old songs were used: songs from movies? songs from dramas? school songs? songs black slaves used to sing? songs on the radio? songs people sang while they worked?

The Civil Right Movement and Protest Songs
Side 2

At the end of Applied English class, answer these questions together as a group. Your don't need to write!

What were people involved in the Civil Rights Movement trying to "overcome"?

What were "freedom riders" trying to do? What were they "riding"?

What were people involved in the Civil Rights Movement hoping to "integrate"?
