A: Hi. It's pretty rainy today, isn't it? ... Are you doing okay?

B: [.....answers.....] ... but, you know, Monday there're no classes. ... I'm not sure why ... do you know?

A: Well ... Monday is a national holiday in the United States. It's Memorial Day. Originally, the holiday was for the purpose of honoring people who had died in the American Civil War in the 1800s [we day "eighteen-eighties"]. Later, the day was changed to honor Americans who died in any war. Nowadays, most people think of the last Monday in May as a day to remember any loved one who has died.

B: Hmm ... interesting. So I suppose we would be able to see flowers in American cemeteries on Monday.

A: Exactly.

B: Well, I hope you have a nice three-day weekend.

A: Same to you.
