  • Write an argumentative essay in response to the statement: People should not be allowed to own handguns. BEFORE you write your essay, talk to some Americans and ask them their opinion about this issue. If you discover something interesting, use it in your essay.

    When you write your essay, take one side and present 3 strong arguments from your side. Support each argument with specific examples.Use appropriate transitions.If possible, use one counterargument in each body paragraph and then refute it with another argument from your side. Your essay should have at least 5 paragraphs -an introduction with a thesis statement (the last sentence in the introduction which states the main focus of your essay), several body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

  • Study for final exam by reading some news articles in English and using an English-English dictionary to look up the meanings of new words. Also, practice discussing some news articles in English with some frineds by giving your opinion about somethings in the stories. Also, review word form exercises in the reading text.

  • Finish any revisions.

  • In the writing book, read p. 74, and do "Space order outlining" (write the answers in your book).
  • In writing book, do "Being specific" practice on pp. 75-76. Write your sentences on a paper to hand in.
  • Go somewhere to observe and write a 1/2 to 1 page description. Use space oder to organize your writing in a logical way, and give specific details about what you observe. (This does NOT have to be typed.) Use the outline and checklist on pp. 83-84 to help you as you write.

  • Make an outline ( a writing plan) for an essay on topic #16 (social issues in Japanes society today)
  • Develop and write an essay for topic #17 (Cultural differences between life in the U.S. and Japan). Your essay should have at least 5 paragraphs (introduction, body, conclusion), and it should be typed (double-spaced).
  • Revise your Education Interview essay. Print a new copy to hand in.
  • In the writing book, read pp. 84-86, and do the practices on p. 85 (p. 73), and pp. 86-87. Write your answers in your book.
  • GET SOME SLEEP before the TOEFL (Tuesday morning 8:45 a.m.!)

  • In the reading book, read Chapter 1 "Sports Around the World" in Unit 4 pp. 107-111. Then do exercises 1 & 3 on pp. 111-114.

  • Read pp. 125-127 in the writing book about adverbs and adjectives.
  • In the reading book, read Chapter 2 "Professional Sports" pp. 115-119, and do ex. 1 & 3 pp. 119-120, 122. Also, ask some Americans 1 or 2 questions from Ex. 2 on pp. 120-121. Come to class prepared to share something that you learned from your conversations.

  • Write a compare/contrast essay about the differences between WU classes and TIU classes. Use transition signals to introduce examples or reasons. Also, use some transition signals to show contrast. Use the sample outlines from class to help you. Your essay should have at least 5 paragraphs, and it should be 1 - 2 typed pages.

  • Finish writing and typing your essay about your impressions of Americans and how your impressions have changed (see the In-class writing essay prompt #26). Use some complex and compound sentences.Your essay should have at least 5 paragraphs -an introduction with a thesis statement (the last sentence in the introduction which states the main focus of your essay), several body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Your essay should be 1-3 pages.
  • Think about the following statement: Women who have young children should not work. Take a side (decide if you agree or disagree with this statement). Then write 5 arguments to support your opinion (your side). Also, write 5 arguments to support the opposite side.

  • Write two process paragraphs. Use your own topics (you could use the topics from the homework you did for Wednesday), but be sure to use time-order and transition signals. You may type OR write these.

  • Reread Chapter 1 in Unit 3 on "Education in the U.S." and do ex. 3 on p. 78.
  • Do the News For You worksheet for 3/13.

  • Write essay #13. Spend only 15-20 minutes.
  • In the reading book, read pp. 62-65, "Welcome to New York". Then write a 1/2 page reaction to the story.

  • Study for Midterm Exam: review Units 1 & 2 in the writing book; practice reading something in English, and then discuss it with someone to see if you understood it correctly; practice using your yellow English dictionary to look up new words. BRING YOUR DICTIONARY TO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY!
  • Do the News For You worksheet for 3/20.

  • Write an essay using the information from your interviews about Education. Your essay should have at least 5 paragraphs. It should have an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It should be 1 -2 typed pages (this was assigned 3/25/02).
  • In the reading book, read Chapter 3 "Education in South Korea". Do the ex. on pp. 94-95, and 97-98.
  • In the writing book, do #2 and #3 of the activity on pp. 71-72. Read pp. 72-73 (you only need to read).
