English Language Learning on the Web

Description:

1. For this assignment, you will be using and evaluating some Web sites designed to help you learn English.

2. Click on the link below to take you to a list of English Language Learning Web links.

3. You assignment is to choose one of these sites, use it extensively and then prepare an oral and written evaluation to present to the class.

4. The written report should include the following and should be typed as a Word document:

• Site Name
• Author (if you can find her/him)
• Site Address (URL)
• Description - a two or three sentence description about what they site offers. Be as specific as you can.
• Evaluation
  • What you found useful?
  • What you think needs improvement?
  • How could it best be used by an English language learner.
  • Would you recommend this site to someone else?
  • Other Comments (optional)

 5. Use Microsoft Word to write your document.

• When you are finished, SAVE your document by choosing the FILE menu and selecting SAVE.
• Where it says SAVE CURRENT DOCUMENT AS, type "yourname_evaluation."
• Click on the SAVE button to save the document.
• Make sure you save the document to the DESKTOP.
• Check it carefully for grammar and spelling mistakes.
  

5. Copy your file to Porpoise:

• Select the APPLE Menu and select CHOOSER.
• Click on APPLESHARE and then on PORPOISE. Click OK.
• Log onto Porpoise as a GUEST. Click OK.
• Find FALL99COURSES and click once on it. Click OK.
• You will now see an icon appear on your desktop with the name FALL99COURSES. Double-click to open that folder.
• Find the folder called INFOSCI and double click to open it.
• Find the folder called WEB_EVALUATION and copy your file from the desktop to this folder. Make sure you have given your file the correct name (yourname_evaluation).

6. Finishing:

• When you are finished copying your file to FALL99COURSES, please drag the icon for FALL99COURSES to the Trash.
• Go to the SPECIAL Menu and select EMPTY TRASH.
• You are finished....

7. In class on Wednesday Sept. 8 and Fri. Sept 10, you will be presenting your information orally to the class and showing the Web site you have chosen.
