Citations for Web Sources

1. When you create a web page, it is much like writing a paper, in that you must cite where you got the information you are using. To cite means "to list a reference."

When you create your web page, you will using three kinds of information:

Your Own Ideas
no citation necessary - it is your own work
Direct Quote
Direct quote means to copy exact words or phrases from a source.
Short quote - use quotation marks

Longer quote - use block style

Paraphrased Information
To paraphrase means to put something in your own words.

Even though you paraphrase your material, you must STILL cite that information. Your words may be different, but the ideas belong to someone else.

2. When you cite a source in your web page, you should use the forms above, except make the author's last name a link to your works cited section. the works cited section can be a separate page or listed at the bottom of your page. Where possible, list the information as hyperlinks.
