Tips for Using the Tape Recorders

[See also: Tips for Interviewing]

1. Make sure you have become familiar with how to operate the tape recorder.

2. Make sure you have a cassette tape cued up and in the tape recorder.

3. Label the tape with your name, the assignment and the date. If possible, use the counter to mark different assignments.

4. Make sure your batteries are in good working order and properly installed in the tape recorder.

5. When you find someone to interview, ask permission from the student to tape record the activity.

6. Choose a relatively quiet place in which to conduct the interview.

7. Hold the recorder so that both you and the other student can be clearly heard. Explain to them that the information will only be used in class.

8. Test the tape recorder immediately before using it to make sure it is working and that it will record you and your interviewee clearly.

9. As soon as you finish your interview, use the counter to mark on the tape case the beginning and ending points of the interview and the name of the activity.

10. Keep your tape recorder, headphones and tapes in a secure place - you will be responsible for replacing the recorder and headphones, if they are lost or stolen.
