Prof. Gregory Intro to Linguistics Summer 2001 TIUA
Working in groups, review all the readings, lecture notes and other material from our discussions of first language acquisition (L1A) and second language acquisition (L2A). Develop a 15 to 20-minute presentation in which you compare and contrast L1A and L2A. Discuss the development of the language systems of children learning their first language and adults learning a second language. How are they the same? How are they different? Give specific examples from real data. Make sure you present the examples and show how they support what you are saying. Be as detailed and specific as possible. Also, be creative in the manner in which you make your presentation. Make sure you have good graphics to support what you say. The general organization of your presentation should be as follows:
- Introduction
- Comparison and Contrast of L1A and L2A - with specific examples.
- Conclusion - summarize your main points
- Unanswered Questions - indicate what questions about L1A and L2A are still unanswered for you and why you think they are interesting questions.
This presentation should be the most comprehensive you have done yet. It should show that you have learned the material well and that you have developed your presentation skills. Practice and prepare so that you will do a good job!
General outline due Monday, June 25. At that time, Professor Gregory will discuss the outline with your group and give suggestions for your presentation.
Presentations will be given on Thursday, June 28.
