Map Task Research Project
|
- Working in groups, your job is to
select two TIUA students who are not part of this class and tape
record the two of them doing the map task.
- In order to do this task, you
will need a tape recorder with good batteries and a cassette tape.
Also, you will need copies of the two maps and the instructions
for the speakers.
- Find a quiet place and find two
students who you think will be enthusiastic
participants.
- Make sure you only give them the
written instructions for the map task. Do NOT give them any hints
or try to explain in more detail what they are doing.
- Make sure you test the tape
recorder before you start. If everything is working, start the
recorder and begin. Read aloud the directions
to the two students. Make sure they have a written
copy.
- Make sure they cannot see each
other's maps.
After the Task Is
Finished:
- Thank your
participants.
- Take time to listen carefully to
the tape - perhaps many times.
- Identify some specific examples
of the interlanguage systems of these two learners. For example,
look for particular grammatical forms that are used or consistent
errors. Make a transcript of portions of these
sections.
- Second, identify how the learners
solved the communication problems that are built into the task.
Make a transcript of portions of these sections.
- Prepare a group poster
presentation of your findings. Include a handout with key
examples. Make your posters clear and creative.
