Phonology Homework - Interpreting Phonological Rules

  1. Look at the following examples. Each word has the phonetic and phonemic transcriptions. Try to figure out the phonological rule which accounts for when /i/ becomes /I:/. The ":" symbol means the vowel has been lengthened in sound. Write the rule both formally and informally.

     

  2. Look at the following examples. Each word has the phonetic and phonemic transcriptions. Try to figure out the phonological rule that accounts for when the vowel sound becomes nasalized. The "`" symbol means nasalized. Write the rule both formally and informally.

     

  3. Look at the following examples. Each word has the phonetic and phonemic transcriptions. Try to figure out the phonological rule that accounts for when the consonant becomes a "flap". A "flap" is the sound produced when the tip of the tongue contacts the alveolar ridge very quickly. It sounds much like the /d/ sound. Write the rule both formally and informally.
