Rules

- Look at the following examples. Each word has the
phonetic and phonemic transcriptions. Try to figure
out the phonological rule which accounts for when /i/ becomes
/I:/. The ":" symbol means the vowel has been lengthened in sound.
Write the rule both formally and informally.

becomes nasalized. The "`" symbol means nasalized. Write the rule

- Look at the following examples. Each word has the
phonetic and phonemic transcriptions. Try to figure
out the phonological rule that accounts for when the consonant
becomes a "flap". A "flap" is the sound produced when the tip of
the tongue contacts the alveolar ridge very quickly. It sounds
much like the /d/ sound. Write the rule both formally and
informally.
