1. A TIUA Tutor:
- is a successful Willamette student
who is paid to help you during her or his tutoring hours
only.
- is a student who is interested in you
and in international education
- can help you with assignments that
you still don't completely undestand after you have
carefully listened in class and have done the best job
you can do on your homework.
- can provide extra help to more
advanced students by discussing reading assignments with
you or by conversing about topics of your
choice.
- can help you learn how to
study.
2. Do as much of your homework as
possible before you see the tutor. Additionally, tell
the tutor exactly what the assignment is. Bring any
textbooks and handouts you need for the assignment. Bring
your dictionary.
3. Bring specific
questions
4. Examples of a good way to use tutoring
time:
- "I can't understand number 7 on page
48 in the chapter on phonology."
- I have finished by paper. Would you
check to see if I used the simple past tense correctly
and explain any errors to me so I can correct them
myself?"
- I need to learn how to organize my
time so that I am not studying at 4:00 a.m. Do you have
some suggestions?
5. Examples of inappropriate (bad) ways
to use tutoring time:
- "I don't understand my
homework."
- "Would you check my
paper?"
- "Please tell me what the reading
says."
6. Make sure you attend all your tutoring
appointments on time and well prepared.
7. Do not stop by unexpected and
unplanned at the tutor's room asking for help. If you need
extra help, talk to the professor and the tutor and arrange
some special times.
